Just Do It

"Give up, thinking as though not giving up. Observe the techniques as though not observing."

The above is one of my favorite quotes. Who do you think made it? A chinese monk or maybe Ghandi? Well all of the above are wrong. This ever so deep quote was made by the ultimate ass-kicker. Mr. Bruce Lee.

After first reading this quote some think that it's a horrible idea, that it promotes giving up, not trying and not caring but in actuallity it does the complete opposite. What this quote is trying to get across is also paraphrased in Nike's famous slogan of "Just Do It." That is... don't try, don't hope...do it.

Often we're so focused on analyzing the outcome that we lose our own flow. It doesn't matter what the activity is, but if we're too concerned with the outcome we will almost certainly fall short every time. You see the idea of trying a task creates the possibility of failure in our mind, which is where Nike got it right. Now maybe if they'd just pay those little indonesian kids more then a bag of potato chips to make their products they'd have it all figured out.

The occurence of gathering too much information on something often blinds us from listening to our instinces and pushes us to spend to much time worrying about results and wondering "what if." The fact is that this small act usually is only part of the big picture, so just do it, learn from it, and move on. Trust yourself, if only for a small while.

So my friends, I leave you with this: One of Nike's new commercials that motivates the hell outta' me. Hopefully it'll do something for you too.

  1. The problem with "Just Do It" is sometimes it requires Re-Doing It again and again and again. But then without failure there is no perseverence and without peseverence we do not grow in character and without character there is no hope and as you know hope never disappoints. It is a mainstay of life.
